It is our great pleasure to come across an exceptional cookbook, but even more of a pleasure when it is written by a friend. We met Ronnie when we entered the journalistic and virtual world of food writing – now almost 10 years ago, and have learned so much from her website and books. She explores the types of foods that we have avoided, out of fear of the unknown, and she makes them unthreatening, familiar and delicious. We have made so many new food discoveries through Ronnie's expertise.
Ronnie's love for cooking and entertaining are obvious as we read this book! Her versatile "foodie" background includes cookbook author, journalist, recipe creator, talk show host and a bunch of other food-related callings. Her food roots are deep and started early as she describes her parents as people who literally followed the adage "All who are hungry, let them come and eat". Ronnie's family heritage is unique as well; it goes back to the ancient Jewish community of Central Asia, and many of her flavors reflect the Persian, eastern world.
The Modern Kosher Kitchen is a creative, contemporary collection of 125 recipes – a fusion of new foods combined with traditional and contemporary flavors. Ronnie provides easy to follow instructions, and recipes we never would have attempted without her guidance. Sriracha-infused mayonnaise, crème fraiche, lemongrass, freekeh, ponzu sauce are just some of the ingredients she shares with her readers. There are also traditional dishes such as split pea soup, where she adds a touch of cumin to mimic a smoky flavor and Afghan risotto, a one pot meal with made with short grain brown rice. By the way, all of the ingredients she uses are very easy to find in most supermarkets.
